At Home Synthesis Assignment

Introduction:

In the world of academia, the gravest sin is plagiarism. For those that commit the crime, the consequences can be damning. Some merely receive a zero on the assignment, some are dropped from the class where they committed the offense, and for those at the university level, they could be expelled.

Put simply, plagiarism is theft. It is stealing another person's intellectual property.

If the consequences are not severe, then people would steal others' ideas, pawn them off as their own, and obscure the authenticity of the original author/artist. If plagiarism had light consequences and people were taking others' work licentiously, then it could lead to the end of original and creative thinking. In sum, heavy consequence for plagiarism promote genuine creativity.

Assignment:

Carefully read the following sources. Then, in a short essay that synthesizes at least three of the sources, take a position that defends, challenges, or qualifies the claim that "heavy consequences for plagiarism promote creativity." Cite the sources as Source A, Source B, and so forth.

Source A: Is it Plagiarism Yet?

Source B: Something Borrowed

Source C: Our View: Plagiarism Will Not be Tolerated

Source D: Yes, I Plagiarized

Source E: Oh, brothers! Book suit slams Wayans

Source F: Cartoon

Source G: A page from the MLA handbook

This assignment is due Monday at the beginning of class. It must be typed and in MLA format. 36 points in the processed writing category.

  1. I received this email earlier today:

Hey Mr. Frieden I'm a bit confused on the Works Cited, Do we need to site the three sorces we use or just do the in-text citations and not a works cited page?

    Answer:

You don't need a works cited page (bibliography) with documentation. When you cite a source, just use the letter designations (A, B, C, etc.).

There are a couple of ways to do this...

    (1) lead into your quote or paraphrased reference by writing something like "source A says...".

    (2) you could use a parenthetical citation at the end of the quote or paraphrase, like this (Source A).

If you have any other questions, ask them here please! We all benefit.
